Biography - Richard Hoare

The ordinary does not exist, it is only the extraordinary that we have not noticed.
At the heart of my work is the observation of Light and its constant change recreating every moment. My aim is to catch the wonder of these extraordinary instants.

Walking in the landscape directly feeds into my work. The impressions that filter into a person reflect in what comes out. This is why I work outside and rely on this nutrition when back in the studio. It is a process as vital and complementary as breathing.

To make a picture is to create a space into which the subtle essence of a subject might descend. The essence of Nature is necessity; it shuns the unnecessary as unnatural. To draw is to use contrast; light to dark, and painting is only the extension of this into the warmth and coolness of colour. So it is inevitable that an artist must learn to ride the horse of paradox. My work reflects this journey of Learning.
