Richard Hoare

CM : What are you trying to achieve in your paintings ?

RH: To reflect and offer back the light I see.
The experience of painting is like casting a mirror in a foundry - the heat is the inspiration which sometimes flashes intensely and more often is gradual and sustained over a long period. The dance of paint and surface is when ideas are in a molten state that I learnt to use when working on the monotype drawings.
I am aiming to polish and refine the surface of the ‘mirror ‘ and then the light which I never try to touch or control runs through the image of the tree or landscape shown. It is an act of invocation making a space for this spirit which is timeless in Nature. I experience and contact this spirit through the act of painting and observing the light.
